Freedom seemed to have triumphed with the collapse of the Soviet Union. But, in fact, it remains highly vulnerable, under threat from both individuals and leaders of democracies. How can freedom survive in an open society? How can the world attain stability in the post-Cold War world? Niether freedom, nor prosperity, nor peace were spontaneously acquired when ideologies ended. They must be won by the willpower and the action of human beings.
